In Damien Davis’ art, the Black diaspora is seen in its vastness, complexity and sheer coolness. Born in Louisiana, raised in Arizona, and now based in New York, Davis explores Blackness in the past, present, and future through multimedia sculptures and design. The double New York University grad’s work has been on exhibit at The Metropolitan Museum of Art (“Ancient Still Life”), Superposition Gallery (“Saturn Gives Structure to the Dream”), the International African American Museum (“Follow the North Star: Freedom in the Age of Mobility”) and Katonah Museum of Art (“Stellar Reverberations: African Masks in Outer Space”). Davis reaches back to the artists community as a lecturer on sculpture at SUNY Purchase and as the programs manager for the arts nonprofit Project Empty Space. Whether he’s developing online projects like "Checking in" or designing the Native Son Award which is a work of art, know that Davis’ designs are nothing short of immaculate. This is what Afro Futurism looks like. — J.S.M.
