DéVon Johnson

DéVon Johnson could have easily stayed climbing up the corporate ladder in entertainment. However, as a natural-born disruptor, he saw entrepreneurship as the clear path for him. After roles at Def Jam Recordings, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group, Johnson launched his first entrepreneurial endeavor, the print magazine Bleu. The magazine was the flagship for the Bleu Life Media Group, which now includes digital, podcast, and e-commerce offerings. But one business isn’t enough for this New York native. In 2020, Johnson co-founded the nonprofit Black Owned Media Equity and Sustainability Institute (BOMESI), an organization dedicated to uniting and advancing Black-owned media businesses. In partnership with General Motors and Procter & Gamble, the Institute launched the BOMESI Accelerator, another endeavor that strives to increase the number of Black-owned and diverse media companies who can sustainably do business with the United States’ top advertisers. Now this is how you create change, equity, and space for Black storytellers. — J.S.M.
