Jonathan McCrory

In 2012, a fresh breath of air began walking through the pioneering National Black Theatre, the once theatrical home of stage icons Phylicia Rashad, Samuel L. Jackson, and the late Michael K. Williams. Jonathan McCrory was named the Executive Artistic Director and his vision is still going strong. Last year, he was co-producer for the revival of Purlie Victorious starring Leslie Odom Jr. and Kara Young who won the 2024 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play. The National Black Theatre’s Broadway revival was nothing short of a success during its 2023-2024 season run, earning the production six Tony Award nominations. Outside of theater, McCrory conceptualizes events uplifting the Black diaspora. He created “The Gathering: A Collective Sonic Ring Shout” at the Kennedy Center, in partnership with the Apollo Theater and National Black Theatre. This year, he was an honoree for the 2024 Gay City News Impact Awards. The world is our stage thanks to McCrory. — J.S.M.
