KIMAHLI POWELL

Kimahli Powell is on the frontlines of leading social change as Executive Director of Rainbow Railroad, a global organization that helps LGTBQI+ people facing persecution based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, and sexual characteristics. Last fall, he signed his name to a human rights letter to President Biden urging the administration to end Title 42, the law “empowering federal health authorities to prohibit migrants from entering the country if it is determined that doing so could prevent the spread of contagious diseases,” according to Pew Research Center. Powell’s work in the field spans more than 20 years with a focus on social justice including international development, LGTBQ+ rights, HIV, youth and the arts. “We are trying to create a world where LGBTQ+ individuals will be able to access lives free from prosecution,” he told CBS’ 60 Minutes during a feature on the program. Powell has been recognized for his work by OUT magazine. Powell is leading by example and proving that not all heroes wear capes but maybe a power suit. —K.M.
