Alix Dejean’s title says it all. Special Assistant to the President, Director of Public Engagement & Intergovernmental Affairs, Office of Vice President Kamala Harris at The White House. As Black gay and queer men, historically, our influence in politics, policy, and government is unparalleled, although often hidden in the shadows. But the Democratic Presidents of the United States (particularly under Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and Joe Biden) were intentional about inclusion and representation, often appointing Black LGBTQ+ folks to forward facing positions in their cabinets and staffing. Dejean, who works with both President Biden and Vice President Harris, is proof positive that our presence in Washington, D.C. is being seen, heard, and respected. — E.W.
