Within the dance world, Bill T. Jones is an icon. From his solo performances to his choreography, Jones has blessed the stage with his magnificent movements since the 1970s. In 1983, with his then partner Arnie Zane, they launched the Bill T. Jones / Arnie Zane Company. Together, the two pushed the boundaries of society’s perception of queerness, body image, and dance. Then, in 1994, six years after Zane passed away from HIV-related lymphoma, Jones premiered Still/Here. The powerful modern dance piece told a multidisciplinary story of people living with HIV. The now masterpiece was "canceled" by a harsh critique by The New Yorker by a biased critic who didn't even see the work. Now, 30 years later, the two-time Tony Award winner has breathed new life into the Still/Here with performances staged at the Brooklyn Academy of Music this year. — J.S.M.
