Dean Atta

The Black British poet and author Dean Atta continues to breathe new life into the ways we view ourselves. He’s become known for his unapologetic writing around social injustice, identity and queerness. This was exemplified within Atta’s fierce debut poetry novel I Am Nobody’s Nigger in 2013. Since then, Atta’s literature gives young adult Black gay audiences the representation we deserve in his works The Black Flamingo, There is (still) love here (poems) and Only On the Weekends. In 2024, Atta published two firsts: a children’s picture book, Confetti, and adult-themed memoir, Person Unlimited: An Ode to My Black Queer Body. While Confetti gives young readers room to find celebration in even the smallest things, Person Unlimited is a daring meditation on Black queer bodies, image, age and self-acceptance. Words have power and Atta is empowering us to love ourselves and know that we are more than enough. — J.S.M.
