Kleaver Cruz

Black joy is an infinitely powerful force, one that can start movements, heal spirits, and build community. Creative and educator Kleaver Cruz recognizes that power and has helped so many Black people harness it for themselves. In 2015, the New York City native was navigating the loss of their uncle, as well as constantly bearing witness to the collective Black pain from their community organizing work. What sprung forth was a new mission and creation of The Black Joy Project, a digital platform centering the ideology that “Black joy is resistance.” Nine years later, Cruz’s activism culminated in their book, The Black Joy Project: A Visual and Literary to How We Thrive, and a shift into a full-service website of curated Black TLGBQIA+ and femmes supported resources that celebrate self-affirmations. Now this is what Black joy is all about. — J.S.M.
