Lee Daniels

From Monster’s Ball to Precious to Empire, Lee Daniels understands what it takes to capture an audience. The Director and Producer continues to make viewers cry, laugh, and sing along in joy. This year the filmmaker added terrify to his list of genre-busting themes with The Deliverance, his take on the real life horrors experienced by the Ammons family in 2011. Daniels’ star power for the film—Andra Day, Glenn Close, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor and Academy Award winner Mo’Nique—helped secure The Deliverance a top spot on Netflix’s Global Top 10. Although critics were quite loud in their thoughts of the film, the numbers hushed them up. With over 14.5M views in its first week and over 21.8M in its second week, there’s no wonder it was the number one movie on Netflix in the United States. No easy feat, but all in a day's work for the accomplished filmmaker. — J.S.M.
