Paul Tazewell

This year Paul Tazewell made history by becoming the first Black man to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design for Wicked. His spectacular work in the iconic film also won him BAFTAs, Critics’ Choice Awards, and Costume Designers Guild Awards. A few months later Paul won the Tony Award for Best Costume Design for Death Becomes Her and the Native Son Award. One look at Tazewell’s intricate designs and it’s easy to be transported into another world. With his creations, the famed costume designer weaves fashion stories that thrill, excite, and inspire with each stitch and hand-embroidered detail. Tazewell’s experience spans three decades of work across film, television, and theater. The Pratt Institute and NYU alumnus became a household name after scoring his first Tony Award in 2016 for Best Costume Design of a Musical for Hamilton. To witness Tazewell’s work is to experience a masterclass in both the technical and emotional elements of storytelling through costume design. And with Wicked: For Good having debuted this November, Tazewell is yet again driving conversations with his stunning designs and vision.
