Tarell Alvin McCraney

Tarell Alvin McCraney is an artistic force blessing the renowned Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles with his leadership as its artistic director. Under his purview, McCraney is bringing new works and re-envisioned classics to the famed theater. The former co-chair of playwriting for Yale’s School of Drama was appointed to his role at Geffen Playhouse in 2023, launching his inaugural 2024-2025 season with the 20th anniversary production of his original play, The Brother Size. McCraney’s creative work, which shines a light on Blackness, queerness, and the intimacy in between these identities, also transcends the stage. In 2016, McCraney commanded the Hollywood spotlight when the Barry Jenkins-directed Moonlight, adapted from McCraney’s script In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue, premiered to universal acclaim. McCraney scored a coveted Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 2016 ceremony. Following his Oscar win, McCraney wrote and executive produced the OWN series David Makes Man in 2019. And just this year, his moving play We Are Gathered opened in May 2025 at Arena Stage, highlighting the intricacies of Black queer love. McCraney’s work continues to bring Black queer people to the forefront of theatre, TV, and film.
