Politics and love go hand-in-hand when it comes to Democratic State Representative Venton Jones and his fiancee Gregory Scott Jr. As one of the first out Black gay men to serve in the Texas state legislature, Jones has worked to uplift Texas’ 100th district since 2023. While his partner Scott is a people and culture expert working as an executive in consumer services. The couple captured headlines in January when Jones surprised Scott with a proposal at the Texas State House in Austin, Texas — just moments after Jones was sworn into office for his second term as a state representative. The proposal was met with cheers and excitement from those present in the state Capitol. And video of their sweet milestone went viral across social media, as people celebrated their declaration of Black queer love in the face of continued attacks on LGBTQ rights across the country. Speaking on the proposal to American-Statesman, Jones said he viewed it as an opportunity to start the legislative session “on a note of love and just joy” following him and his colleagues’ fight in the previous session against over 144 bills aimed at reducing the rights of the LGBTQ community in Texas. And with the rousing response the duo received, their loving moment was indeed an empowering reminder of the strength and power of queer love.
