Comedian Alex English, a Detroit native with the gift to make you laugh out loud through his shock-value comedy, secured a 2022 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series. The nod came after his first season as a sketch writer on Saturday Night Live.Getting to the wildly iconic show that launched the careers of Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Tracy Morgan and Kenan Thompson took English three times before he officially got the call. “In my situation the third time was the charm,” he told The Detroit Metro Times early this year. English has other writing credits, including The Fix and The Rundown with Robin Thede. His talent goes well beyond his pen game as he’s been credited as an actor on shows such as Pause with Sam Jay, That Damn Michael Che, and Inside Amy Schumer. When he isn’t on screen, you can find English on stage honing his craft or hosting a weekly comedy show at the Jane Hotel in New York City. —K.M.
