It really takes a village, something Greg Mathis Jr. and his husband Elliot Cooper know well. The couple kept us glued to our TV screens when we got a taste of their lives in the reality TV show, Mathis Family Matters on E!. Led by the family’s patriarch, Judge Greg Mathis Sr., the TV series highlighted not only Black family values, but also how Black families embrace their queer relatives. While their TV series didn’t continue, their immense love for each other did, and the two tied the knot in an intimate ceremony with loved ones in Mexico which was covered in a People exclusive. Post wedding, the power couple are also busy expanding their resumes. Mathis is a political professional-turned-actor, steadily building up his portfolio, while Cooper is an engineer. Work aside, the happy couple are also committed to community service, hosting philanthropic events to raise funds and awareness around lupus, a chronic illness that Cooper’s mom passed away from. Mathis Jr. and Cooper are living their best and most authentic lives reminding us of the beauty of Black queer love. — J.S.M.
