While navigating his career from PR/marketing to art curator, Phillip Michael Collins found discovering art which reflected his lived experiences were far and few in between. Then something he overheard by Issa Rae took hold. She said “help those around us with the resources we have” and that informed the start of Good Black Art. The enabled company, in a two-fold process, provides a platform for emerging artists to share their art and educates first time art buyers to create legacy by purchasing art work. Since its inception in 2021, Good Black Art has been featured in Elle Decor and boasts partnerships with Wayfair for prints and Sotheby’s to connect fellow art collectors. Collins has also collaborated with the Philadelphia Museum of Art on a three-part video series “Everyday,” highlighting Black contemporary life through art. This year, Good Black Art went global with “Brooklyn to Burgundy,” a music and wine immersion program through a partnership with Hautes Côtes at Château du Clos de Vougeot in France. Good Black Art is doing good Black work. — J.S.M.
